New Delhi: The Board of Directors of NTPC Limited has approved investments of Rs 79,738.45 crore for Stage-II expansion of three super thermal power projects on November 5, the Maharatna PSU told the bourses. The board has approved the setting up of Stage-II of three power projects — Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project, Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Project and Telangana Super Thermal Power Project.

Three units of 800 MW each will be set up under Stage-II of Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project at an appraised current estimated cost of Rs 29,947.91 crore, said NTPC. The Stage-II of Gadarwara Super Thermal Power Project will involve the setting up of two units of 800 MW each at a cost of Rs 20,445.69 crore, while three units of 800 MW each will be set up under Stage-II of Telangana Super Thermal Power Project at a cost of Rs 29,344.85 crore.

At a recent investors’ call conference, the NTPC management said that the company is considering awarding thermal capacity to the tune of 13.6 GW by the financial year 2026-27. This is in addition to the 11.16 GW thermal capacity already under construction. India has plans to add 80 GW of thermal power capacity by 2031-32 to meet the rapidly growing power demand.
