The proposed facility will convert high-ash Indian coal from NTPC’s captive mines into Synthetic Natural Gas, a cleaner fuel alternative that can be used for NTPC’s gas-based power stations and in-situ power generation. The initiative is aimed at managing peak-hour power generation while promoting the sustainable utilization of domestic coal resources.

The development of the Coal-to-SNG facility is aligned with the national vision for cleaner coal technologies and energy diversification. Coal gasification, which forms the foundation of the project, is being increasingly recognised as a critical enabler for reducing import dependency and lowering emissions from coal usage.

NTPC’s R&D wing, NETRA, is leading the initiative under its broader “Greening the Coal” vision, which focuses on developing carbon capture, utilization, and other clean coal technologies. The collaboration with EIL marks a significant milestone in advancing indigenous capabilities for clean energy production and reinforces NTPC’s commitment to innovation-driven sustainability.

NTPC currently meets about one-fourth of India’s power requirements with an installed capacity of 84 GW. The company has an additional 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable energy projects. It has set an ambitious goal of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 as part of its contribution to India’s net-zero ambitions.

With a diversified portfolio spanning thermal, hydro, solar, and wind power, NTPC continues to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to the nation. Beyond conventional power generation, the company is also expanding into emerging areas such as e-mobility, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear power, and green hydrogen solutions. It has also entered the power distribution segment through participation in bids for Union Territories.
