New Delhi: NTPC Green, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Honeywell to explore the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India on Monday. The partnership marks a major step in NTPC Green’s efforts to advance green hydrogen applications and position India as a hub for SAF development.

As part of the agreement, NTPC Green and Honeywell will jointly assess the use of Honeywell’s proprietary eFining™ technology to convert carbon dioxide (CO₂) captured from NTPC’s thermal power plants, in combination with green hydrogen, into SAF. The initiative is closely tied to NTPC Green’s upcoming Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh—one of the company’s most ambitious clean energy projects to date.

“SAF production forms the sizeable part of the ambitious Green Hydrogen Hub of NTPC Green in Pudimadaka,” said DMR Panda, Executive Director (Green Hydrogen), NTPC Ltd. “We believe that the mandate in the aviation sector for blending SAF in jet fuel will drive many early mover projects in green hydrogen.”

By aligning SAF production with India’s broader decarbonization and energy security goals, NTPC Green is strategically positioning itself at the intersection of innovation and sustainability. The collaboration with Honeywell strengthens NTPC Green’s portfolio in green fuels and supports its vision of driving large-scale impact across the energy value chain.

The feasibility study, expected to be completed by mid-2025, will lay the groundwork for a potential large-scale SAF production ecosystem in India. This could serve both domestic and international markets, enhancing India’s role as a sustainable fuel exporter and supporting its commitments under global climate agreements.

Ranjit Kulkarni, Vice President and General Manager, Energy and Sustainability Solutions at Honeywell India, emphasized the synergy between the two companies: “Our collaboration with NTPC Green will leverage Honeywell’s expertise in SAF solutions to efficiently treat emissions from thermal energy, foster green hydrogen adoption, and help India’s aviation sector meet its long-term environmental goals.”

Through strategic partnerships and advanced technologies, the company is reinforcing its role as a leader in India’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
