New Delhi: In line with India's target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070, India’s largest power company, NTPC Ltd, has signed an agreement with Vienna-based Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) to support the company’s transition to clean energy, said a statement issued by SEforALL.
As part of the agreement, SEforALL will assist NTPC in developing a comprehensive energy transition roadmap. This roadmap will align with India’s broader goals of energy security, sustainable development, and its international climate commitments. It will include scenario modelling across NTPC’s short, mid, and long-term strategic horizons. The exercise will estimate investment needs, identify diversification opportunities, and highlight the socio-economic benefits of moving toward cleaner energy systems.
NTPC’s contribution to India’s energy transition is already evident through its pioneering research and development initiatives and the large-scale deployment of clean energy technologies. These include green hydrogen pilot projects, floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), pumped storage hydropower, and carbon capture and utilization (CCU).
Founded in 1975, NTPC has played a foundational role in powering India through decades of industrialization and urban growth. In 2021, it became the first major Indian utility to commit to a UN Energy Compact, pledging ambitious sustainability targets, including the installation of 60 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2032. While NTPC’s installed capacity is still predominantly derived from thermal power, the company has significantly expanded its renewable energy footprint—covering solar, wind, and hydro sources—and now contributes close to one-fourth of the country’s total electricity generation. This positions it as a key pillar of India’s energy security.
“Our aim is to foster responsible, sustainable economic development through an energy strategy that champions energy security, social inclusiveness, environmental stewardship, and growth powered by data, technology, and innovation. This agreement positions us to meet the rising demand from communities and industry while keeping us at the leading edge of the energy transition,” said Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC.
“India continues to show climate leadership on the global stage moving beyond commitment to concrete actions while demonstrating that the energy transition in emerging countries can co-exist alongside economic development. We are excited to support NTPC to co-create net zero roadmap for the energy giant of India. I laud NTPC for its commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources,” said Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All.
