New Delhi: Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) (49%), has achieved a significant milestone by successfully synchronizing Unit-2 (660 MW) of its 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project with the national grid.

The synchronisation of the turbine-generator (TG) set with the 765 kV grid was completed at 00:05 hrs on July 20, in a single attempt and ahead of schedule, following the successful completion of the Steam Blowing milestone. This marks a critical step towards the plant’s Commercial Operation Declaration (COD), and underscores the JV's commitment to supplying 31.68 Million Units of reliable power to the grid.

“The focused and dedicated efforts of NUPPL, NLCIL and UPRVUNL, supported by the Ministry of Coal, Board members and our contracting partners, made this achievement possible,” said Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD of NLC India Limited and Chairman of NUPPL.

With Unit-1 already operational since December 2024, the commissioning of Unit-2 moves the project closer to full-scale operation. Unit-3 is expected to be commissioned in FY 2025-26.

Located in Ghatampur Tehsil, Kanpur Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project consists of three supercritical thermal power units of 660 MW each. The project’s main boiler package is being executed by LMBPL, the turbine package by GEPSIPL, and the Balance of Plant (BOP) by BGRESL.

As per the power allocation plan, 75.12% (1,487.28 MW) of the generated power will be supplied to Uttar Pradesh, while 24.88% (492.72 MW) will be allocated to Assam.

Fuel supply for the plant will be secured through the Pachwara South Coal Block in Dumka district, Jharkhand, which is also being developed by NUPPL.

Designed with a focus on environmental sustainability, the project features supercritical technology along with Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to ensure compliance with environmental norms and achieve Zero Liquid Discharge.

With the successful synchronization of Unit-2, NUPPL is now in the final stages of commissioning activities, moving steadily towards full commercial operation.
