New Delhi: Maharatna Energy PSU, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) posted on Twitter on Monday that ONGC Energy Centre has been awarded the patent for developing a novel catalyst system for CO2 valorisation from the Controller General Patents, Designs, and Trademarks, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The patent certificate posted by the company said that the patentee has been granted the patent for the invention titled, "Catalyst for CO2 methanation reaction having high activity and long-term stability and process thereof." The certificate also clearly stated that the patent will only be valid for 20 years.

CO2 valourisation

Explaining a bit about CO2 valorisation, the state-run PSU said that "it implies recycling carbon from CO2 for producing value-added chemicals, fuels, polymers, etc. OEC adopted the concept of CO2 valorisation which is an approach towards a more circular & climate-neutral economy."

Further, it said, "CO2 is abundant & cheap, found in industrial fuel gas. CO2 refineries are expected to become more relevant, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Using CO2 as a carbon source in industrial recycling can produce valuable chemicals like methanol & diethyl ether, which can serve as fuel. It is a sustainable approach that reduces fossil fuel consumption and emissions. Continual fossil fuel depletion has led to a shift towards sustainable alternatives, primarily renewable sources."
