New Delhi/Patratu: The Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (PVUNL) is poised to make Jharkhand self-sufficient in power production and generate a surplus of about 600 MW once its second unit begins commercial operations, the company’s CEO told PTI.

PVUNL, a joint venture between the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Ltd, has already been running unit 1 at its Patratu block in Ramgarh district since November 5 last year. That unit has an established capacity of 800 MW.
“The second unit of same capacity is ready for commercial operation,” Chief Executive Officer Ashok Kumar Sehgal told PTI.
Sehgal said the two units will together provide 1,600 MW, supplying about 85 percent of the state’s power needs. “Following the commissioning of unit 2, Jharkhand would get 85 percent power from the two units (1600 MW), and the state would have over 600 MW surplus power,” he said.

The surplus, he added, would enable Jharkhand to sell electricity to other states. PVUNL is also preparing to commission a third 800-MW unit. “This will be sufficient to supply power to the state and allow the government to sell surplus power to other states,” Sehgal said, adding unit 3 is likely to be commissioned in the next six months.
