New Delhi: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, on September 22, to lay the foundation stone of two major hydropower projects of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited.
The projects namely the Heo Hydro Electric Project (240 MW) and the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (186 MW), are being developed through a joint venture between NEEPCO and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, with an estimated investment of over Rs 3,700 crore.
The Heo Hydro Electric Project (3x80 MW), located in the Siyom sub-basin of Shi Yomi district, will generate about 1,000 million units (MUs) of electricity annually. The Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (3x62 MW) will generate around 803 MUs annually. Together, these projects will harness the vast hydroelectric potential of Arunachal Pradesh, promote sustainable energy generation, and bring substantial socio-economic benefits to the region.
By fostering new employment opportunities and strengthening the local economy, the initiatives are expected to accelerate the state’s growth and development, while also contributing to India’s clean energy goals. These projects are aligned with the country’s vision of building a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.
Since its establishment in 1976, NEEPCO has been a backbone of power generation in India’s Northeast Region. Recognised as a Mini Ratna Category-I PSU, the corporation has an installed capacity of 2,057 MW, including hydro, gas-based, and solar projects. Since 2020, NEEPCO has been a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility.
With an installed capacity of 83 GW and 30.90 GW under construction, including, 13.3 GW of renewable energy, NTPC contributes nearly one-fourth of India’s electricity requirements. The company aims to achieve 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032, strengthening India’s commitment to its net zero targets.
