New Delhi: The Government’s flagship rooftop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY), has led to the addition of 9,566.89 MW of rooftop solar (RTS) capacity across the country as of March 20, 2026, marking significant progress in India’s clean energy transition.

This information has been shared by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in an official statement on Wednesday.

Launched in February 2024, the scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households nationwide. According to official estimates, achieving this target could generate nearly 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over the lifetime of the projects, while reducing approximately 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over 25 years.

The initiative is also expected to create around 17 lakh jobs across sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, supply chains, installation, operations and maintenance, and financial services, providing a major boost to green employment.

Designed as a demand-driven scheme, PMSG: MBY enables all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity to apply for rooftop solar installations through a dedicated national portal. The government has streamlined the entire process—from application to subsidy disbursal—ensuring direct transfer of financial assistance to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

To accelerate adoption, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has introduced several facilitative measures. These include collateral-free loans at concessional interest rates (currently around 5.75 percent per annum), simplified regulatory approvals with auto load enhancement up to 10 kW, and integration of net metering agreements within the application process.

The scheme also incorporates innovative models such as RESCO (Renewable Energy Service Company) and Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA), alongside efforts to expand vendor networks and ensure quality installations. Capacity-building and training programmes are being conducted to develop a skilled workforce to support the sector’s rapid expansion.

In addition, the government has undertaken extensive awareness campaigns across print, television, and radio platforms, while establishing a multi-language call centre (15555) for grievance redressal. Regular monitoring and regional review meetings are also being conducted to track progress and address implementation challenges.
