The project involves the upgradation of the electric traction system from the existing 1x25 kV to a more efficient 2x25 kV traction system. The work will be carried out along the Salem Junction (SA) – Podanur Junction (PTJ) and Irugur (IGU) – Coimbatore Junction (CBE) – Podanur Junction (PTJ) sections, falling under the Salem Division of Southern Railway.

The enhancement is aimed at meeting a freight loading target of 3,000 metric tonnes, aligning with Indian Railways' broader goal of augmenting carrying capacity and improving energy efficiency across key freight corridors.
