New Delhi: State-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) aims to expand its crude steel capacity to 35 million tonnes per annum by FY2030-31, with a greater share of value-added and special steels and stronger links with retail customers and MSMEs, Chairman and Managing Director A K Panda said on Thursday.

Addressing the company’s 54th annual general meeting, Panda said the expansion would be supported by low-carbon technologies, digitalisation, greener capacity creation and enhanced customer engagement.

SAIL, India’s largest public sector steelmaker, has an overall capacity of over 20 million tonnes and is implementing expansion plans across its five integrated steel plants.

Value-added steel production rises

Panda said SAIL achieved record crude steel, finished steel and saleable steel production in FY26, alongside a sharper focus on value creation.

Value-added steel output rose 7 percent from FY25 to 10.7 million tonnes, accounting for 56 percent of total saleable steel production. The company also introduced 28 products for the infrastructure, automotive, energy and manufacturing sectors.

SAIL’s annual revenue reached a record of over Rs 1,09,000 crore, up 8 percent from the previous year. Borrowings fell by more than Rs 5,000 crore through improved fund management.

Higher sales volumes, lower inventories and reduced borrowings helped lift profit before tax by 44 percent and profit after tax by 50.5 percent. The board recommended a final dividend of Rs 2.35 per equity share for FY26.

Solar capacity expansion underway

SAIL generated 5.61 million units of green electricity from its first 4 MW floating solar plant at IISCO Steel Plant. A 20 MW floating solar project is underway at Bhilai Steel Plant, while another 278.5 MW of solar projects are under consideration across its plants.

Despite geopolitical uncertainty and volatility in the global steel market, India continued to lead global steel demand growth and remained the world’s fastest-growing major steel producer, Panda said.
