New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has welcomed the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026, notified by the Central Government on August 17, describing it as a significant reform aimed at providing greater policy certainty and a predictable fiscal regime in the mineral sector.

The company said the amendment provides greater clarity and uniformity in mineral taxation and levies while addressing pending retrospective levies. According to SAIL, the changes are expected to provide greater certainty and confidence to the mining industry.

For SAIL, which operates substantial captive iron ore and coal mines, the reform is expected to improve the viability of mining operations, facilitate investment and mine development, and strengthen long-term raw material security.

The company said greater predictability in the fiscal regime would support efficient utilisation and development of its mineral resources and boost iron ore mining. Improved viability and development of captive mines would also enable SAIL to make additional iron ore available for sale in the domestic market, in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework.

SAIL said the increased availability of domestically produced iron ore would strengthen domestic supply chains and support the availability of indigenous raw material for the Indian steel industry.

The reform is also expected to encourage higher investment and production, reduce import dependence, strengthen mineral and energy security, and enhance the competitiveness of mineral-based industries.

SAIL said it remains committed to responsible and sustainable development of its mineral resources, strengthening captive raw-material security and making greater quantities of iron ore available to the domestic market in support of the vision of an Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat.
