SECI will continue to play central role in achieving India's clean energy vision: Shripad Naik

New Delhi: Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will continue to play a central role in achieving India's clean energy vision, Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, said on Monday. He was speaking as chief guest at the celebration of SECI's 15th Foundation Day in New Delhi.

Naik said the corporation had consistently delivered on the nation's clean energy vision. "SECI's 15-year journey stands as a reflection of India's growing leadership in the global renewable energy transition," he said.

SECI Managing Director Akash Tripathi also spoke at the event. He said the company remained committed to opening new opportunities in the renewable energy sector, and would do so by working closely with stakeholders and innovating in line with market requirements. "These 15 years have been a testament to SECI's dedication and the nation's collective will towards sustainable energy. We are thankful to all our stakeholders for putting their faith in us," Tripathi said.

41 GW commissioned in 15 years

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), more than 41 GW of renewable energy generation capacity has been commissioned through SECI by third-party developers over the 15 years. SECI has also signed power sale agreements for more than 67 GW with distribution companies (discoms) and other consumers. The ministry said the market investment enabled by SECI adds up to about Rs 3.6 lakh crore.

The ministry said SECI is also scaling up its own portfolio of projects. It added that the company is active in promoting energy storage, green hydrogen and allied areas.

Green molecules and distributed renewables

The anniversary was marked with a Stakeholders' Meet, which brought together policymakers, industry leaders and financial institutions to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping India's energy transition. The first session was titled "Reimagining Industry through Green Molecules". It looked at the role of green hydrogen and its derivatives in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. The discussion covered domestic production and emerging applications, and it also covered the policy support, infrastructure, technology and financing needed to build green molecule markets at scale.

The second session was titled "The Changing Energy Landscape: Distributed Renewables and New Energy Markets", and it turned to distributed renewable energy. Speakers discussed greater consumer participation, the integration of distributed energy resources and emerging market mechanisms. They also discussed the policy and regulatory frameworks needed to integrate these resources effectively and expand renewable energy.

Among those at the event were Central Electricity Authority (CEA) Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad, MNRE Additional Secretary Mayank Tewari and INOXGFL Group Chairman Vivek Jain.

SECI was incorporated on September 20, 2011, as the implementing agency for the National Solar Mission. It is now a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under MNRE, and the ministry said its mandate covers the complete renewable energy ecosystem.
