Take part in Kolkata Port Trust's design competition, win Rs 3 lakh

Kolkata: Illuminate Howrah Bridge with your ideas and you stand a chance of winning as much as Rs 3,00,000 if you win the competition. Kolkata Port Trust (Shyama Prasad Mookerjee port) has issued a notification of a design competition for static illumination and beautification of Howrah Bridge and adjoining areas of Kolkata.

The best part of it is that from students to architects, architectural firms, design companies, registered companies, students, student groups, architectural or planning schools or colleges and other institutions can take part in the competition.

Scope of the project

The detailed project submission will require the participants to submit lighting design and cleaning, development and lighting of Hooghly Riverbank between Rabindra setu & Vidyasagar setu. The participants will also have to give ideas related to art Installations along the Howrah Bridge’s approach and architectural features adding decorative items on arches, railings such as kinetic sculptures powered by wind.

The submissions are required to design public art spaces, which invloves designing a dedicated area on the bridge for rotating public art exhibitions. In order to make it state-of-the-art, the applicants will suggest photography points and incorporate technology i.e. digital murals or 3D billboards/screens/projections in the approach road from Kolkata side.

It also requires them to design historical plaques in the prime spots of bridge, painting of railings, adjoining Ghat Development, temporary structure for food kisok/stall in the stretch of Rabindra Setu to Vidyasagar setu. For detailed project brief click here.

Important dates for the design competition

Last date for submission of entries is October 09 by 3 pm latest. There will be a webinar explaining the salient features at SMPK Office on October 10. The last date of the submission of fully furnished applications is October 24, 2023. Dates for presentation before the jury and announcement of winners has not been declared yet.

Prize money

The winner of the SPM Port Trust's design competition takes home Rs 3,00,000. There are a couple of commendation prizes as well worth Rs 1,00,000 each.
