New Delhi: In a significant step toward enhancing India’s renewable energy capacity and grid stability, THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) for the supply of 184.08 MW of power from the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) located in Uttarakhand.

The agreement is aimed at supporting Gujarat’s peak-hour power demand and facilitating the integration of large-scale renewable energy into the state’s grid. The signing ceremony took place on Wednesday, in the presence of key dignitaries, including Kanubhai Desai, Minister of Finance, Energy and Petrochemicals, Government of Gujarat; SJ Haider, Additional Chief Secretary; Anupam Anand, MD, GUVNL; Bhakti Shamal, Joint Secretary; RK Vishnoi, CMD, THDCIL; Sipan Kumar Garg, Director (Finance), THDCIL; and KP Jangid, Director (Finance), GUVNL.

Speaking on the occasion, THDCIL CMD highlighted the strategic importance of the agreement in strengthening the state's energy security. “With India’s first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant, we are offering Gujarat a reliable and green energy solution to meet its dynamic peak-hour requirements. The Tehri PSP stands as a testament to THDCIL’s engineering excellence and vision for a sustainable energy future,” he said.

He further emphasized that THDCIL is committed to advancing the clean energy transition through cutting-edge hydropower solutions, ensuring both reliability and flexibility in power generation.

Garg described the agreement as a strategic milestone. “This collaboration reflects our focus on delivering innovative and commercially viable clean energy solutions. It reinforces THDCIL’s role in driving sustainable and resilient growth,” he said.

The MoU and PPA align with the Government of India’s broader push to promote pumped storage technologies as a dependable source of flexible generation and grid balancing—critical in the context of increasing renewable energy integration and fluctuating power demand.

Other officials present at the event included Sourav Nandy, GM (Finance), GUVNL; RK Verma, AGM, THDCIL; Ajay Vaish, DGM, THDCIL, along with representatives from the Government of Gujarat and GUVNL.
