New Delhi: NITI Aayog's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amitabh Kant has been given a tenure extension for a period of one year till June 30, 2022. This is the third extension Amitabh Kant has been given on the post. According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension in tenure of Kant for a further period of one year beyond June 30, 2021, i.e. up to June 30, 2022, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, on the same terms and conditions as approved earlier by the ACC.
Kant is a 1980-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Kerala Cadre. He has been serving as NITI Aayog's (National Institution for Transforming India) CEO since February 17, 2016. He graduated with a degree in Economics (Hons.) from St. Stephen's College, Delhi and earned an MA from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Kant was listed as one of the world's 50 most influential people revolutionizing governance by Apolitical, a global government learning platform.
In addition to his current role as the CEO of NITI Aayog, Kant serves as a Director on the board of the National Highways Authority of India, Member of the Digital Communications Commission of India, Director on the Board of the India International Convention Centre, member of the National Statistical Commission of India, Member of the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) and the Chairman of the Executive Council of the National Institute of Labour Economics, Research and Development.
In the past, Kant has worked as Secretary of Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Chairman & CEO of Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corporation, CMD of ITDC Limited, Secretary of Tourism (Government of Kerala), Managing Director of Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation, District Collector of Kozhikode and Managing Director of Matsyafed. In Kerala, he also served as the Sub Collector of Telicherry, Commissioner of Rural Development and as Principal Secretary and Special Commissioner (Industries).
