New Delhi: Manoj Kumar is set to be the next CMD (Chairman & Managing Director) of WCL (Western Coalfields Limited), a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Coal as  his name has been recommended by a PESB (Public Enterprises Selection Board) panel on Thursday. Currently, he is working as Director (Technical Operation) in the same organisation.

Kumar has been recommended for the post of CMD of WCL from a list of eight candidates, who were interviewed by the selection panel. The list had two candidates from WCL, including Kumar, two candidates from ECL (Eastern Coalfields Limited) and one each from MCL (Mahanadi Coalfields Limited), NCL (Northern Coalfields Limited), CONCOR (Container Corporation of India Limited) and SPMCIL (Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited).

As the CMD of WCL, Kumar will be chief executive of the corporation and will be accountable to the Board of Directors and the government. He will be responsible for the efficient functioning of the corporation and for achieving its corporate objectives and performance parameters. Currently, Rajiv Ranjan Mishra is serving as CMD of the organisation but he is set to superannuate on December 31.

Manoj Kumar's profile

Kumar is an Engineering Graduate (B Tech) in Mining Engineering from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, with 1st class distinction. He also holds an M. Tech in Rock Excavation Engineering from ISM, Dhanbad, and was awarded a gold medal. He also has Mine Managers' Certificate of Competency. Prior to joining WCL, he has served in various capacities in WCL, SECL and ECL since 1985.

WCL has been conferred "Miniratna" status on March 15, 2008. The company has contributed about 6.7 percent of the national coal production during 2014-15. It has mining operations spread over the states of Maharashtra (in Nagpur, Chandrapur and Yeotmal districts) and Madhya Pradesh (in Betul and Chhindawara districts). The company is a major source of coal supplies to the industries located in western India in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and also in Southern India, in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
