New Delhi/Surat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday unveiled multiple solar power plants with a collective capacity of 1 megawatt for the Surat Municipal Corporation in Gujarat. The solar projects are located at various locations in the city to power three water distribution plants and 18 municipal schools. Following the addition of the plants, Surat also became the first in India not reliant on any electricity company for water distribution.

Savings of Rs 6 lakh each month

The electricity produced through the solar power plants will be used for Surat's water works, water treatment plant, and water distribution center. The solar plants are expected to produce around 1.20 mega units, which would see savings of around Rs 6 lakh every month. The project was completed in a record 50 days. "With the latest addition of the plants, Surat Municipal Corporation has become the first Municipal Corporation in the country which is not dependent on any electricity company for water distribution. The electricity generated through the solar power plants will be used for the city's water works, water distribution center, and water treatment plant," Waaree Energies, which has set up the projects, said in a statement.
