Ghatak’s extensive career within the coal industry makes him a seasoned professional for this critical leadership position. Prior to this appointment, he served as Director (Technical/Research & Development) at the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), a consultancy subsidiary of CIL based in Ranchi. He has also contributed to CIL’s corporate headquarters as General Manager, overseeing Project Monitoring and Corporate Planning.

A Mining Engineer from the 1989 batch of Government College of Engineering & Technology, Raipur, Ghatak earned his First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency in 1993. His professional journey began as a Junior Executive Trainee at Western Coalfields Limited, a coal-producing subsidiary of CIL, in 1989. Over the years, he has gained nearly two decades of experience working in mechanized underground mines, a critical area of expertise as CIL targets achieving 100 million tonnes of production from underground mines by FY 2029.

Ghatak played a pivotal role in crafting and executing CIL’s underground vision plan and developing the roadmap for achieving a landmark 1 billion tonnes of coal production. “Ramping up coal production, embracing emerging technologies, strengthening the coal transportation system—especially eco-friendly first-mile connectivity projects—and prioritizing research and development will be my key focus areas,” he stated.
