New Delhi: Amitava Mukherjee has officially taken charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC Limited on Thursday. Prior to his appointment as CMD, Mukherjee had been steering NMDC as the CMD (Additional Charge) since March 2023 while concurrently serving as the Director (Finance) since November 2018. He also holds the chairmanship of NMDC Steel Limited and Legacy Iron Ore Limited.
A distinguished officer from the 1996 batch of the Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS), Mukherjee brings extensive experience in governance and financial management to the role.
Under his leadership, NMDC has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first Indian iron ore mining company to surpass an annual production of 45 million tonnes in FY24. His strategic initiatives have propelled NMDC to its highest-ever turnover and net worth, reinforcing the company’s financial and operational strength.
Mukherjee has been instrumental in adopting advanced digital and technical infrastructure, reviving operations at India’s only mechanized diamond mine, and commissioning the NMDC Steel Plant—an emblem of industrial progress in Bastar. His vision has also driven NMDC’s international expansion, including strategic inroads into gold mining in Australia and the formulation of a global growth blueprint.
An advocate of responsible mining, Mukherjee has played a pivotal role in executing key investment strategies and strengthening financial discipline. Under his stewardship, NMDC is advancing towards an ambitious target of building a mining capacity of 100 million tonnes by 2030.
