

New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed Ravi Ranjan as the new Managing Director (MD) of State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest public sector lender, on Monday.
Prior to his elevation, Ranjan was serving as Deputy Managing Director at SBI. He succeeds Vinay M. Tonse, who completed his tenure as Managing Director on November 30, 2025.
Following the government’s notification, Ranjan assumed charge on Monday, SBI said in a regulatory filing.
According to the notification, the government has approved Ranjan’s appointment as Managing Director up to the date of his superannuation on September 30, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Ranjan brings with him over 33 years of rich and diverse experience in the banking sector. Prior to this assignment, he headed the Corporate Accounts Group (CAG) of the bank as Deputy Managing Director. Over the course of his career, Ranjan has worked extensively across key banking verticals, including International Operations, Treasury Operations, Corporate Banking and Retail Banking.
Ranjan has held several senior leadership positions within SBI and its subsidiaries. His previous assignments include President and Chief Operating Officer of SBICAP Securities Limited, Chief General Manager of the Chennai Circle, Vice President and Head – Syndications at SBI’s Hong Kong operations, and Deputy Managing Director and Head (Equity) at Global Markets. He has also served as General Manager heading Network-II of the Bangalore Circle and worked as Deputy General Manager and Special Secretary to the Chairman at SBI’s Corporate Centre.
On the academic front, Ranjan holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurugram, and a Master’s degree in Science (Botany) from Patna University. He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB).
The board of State Bank of India is headed by the Chairman and is assisted by four Managing Directors.
