New Delhi: NTPC Limited informed the stock exchanges on Tuesday that the government has extended Gurdeep Singh's re-employment as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) for a further six months from August 1, keeping him at the head of India's largest power producer until January 31, 2027, or until a regular appointee takes charge, whichever is earlier.

The filing states that the Ministry of Power conveyed the decision through its "letter No. 8/5/2025-Th.II dated 28th July 2026", and that "the President of India has extended the period of re-employment of Shri Gurdeep Singh (DIN: 00307037) as the Chairman & Managing Director of NTPC Limited on a contract basis, beyond the completion of his current tenure on 31st July 2026 for a further period of six months wef 1st August 2026, or till assumption of charge of the post by the regular incumbent, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest."
The new order is the second time Singh's services have been retained beyond his retirement date on a contract basis. He reached the superannuation age of 60 on July 31, 2025. The first extension, a one-year term from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026, was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and notified by the Department of Personnel and Training in July 2025. The present order runs six months from August 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027.
Singh, a mechanical engineer who previously served as Managing Director of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation, assumed charge as NTPC CMD on February 4, 2016. His second term ran from February 4, 2021 to his superannuation on July 31, 2025. With the latest extension, his continuous run since February 2016 will reach nearly 11 years by January 31, 2027. Having crossed the superannuation age of 60 in July 2025, he is currently around 61.

The repeated short extensions have run alongside an unresolved succession. Reports indicate the Search-cum-Selection Committee interviewed 18 candidates on July 4, after which no name has been announced by the ACC. The exchange filing carries no fixed end for Singh's tenure beyond the six-month outer limit, tying his continuation to the point at which a regular incumbent assumes charge or "further orders" are issued.
