

New Delhi: Deepak Gupta is set to be the next Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG). He has been recommended for the top post by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) on Thursday. Presently, he is serving as Director (Projects) in the same organisation.
Gupta has been recommended for the post of CMD of GAIL from a list of 12 candidates, who were interviewed by the PESB selection panel in its 107th selection meeting held on November 6. Out of 12 candidates, nine candidates were from GAIL itself and one each from Engineers India Limited, Indian Oil and Indian Railways.
Gupta is a Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering (now DTU), with 35 years of rich and multifaceted experience in the Oil & Gas sector. A certified Project Management Professional (PMP®️) from PMI, USA, he is widely respected for his expertise in Project Management, Construction Management and Business Development across diverse domains within the hydrocarbon value chain.
Gupta’s professional journey is marked by his leadership in executing large-scale, complex projects from concept to commissioning, across varied implementation models - EPC (LSTK), EPCM, OBE, and PMC. His ability to seamlessly integrate multi-disciplinary, cross-functional teams across geographies has been a cornerstone of his success in delivering mission-critical infrastructure in complex and challenging environments.
A thought leader and prolific writer, Gupta has authored several technical papers on critical packages and on fast-track project execution. His ideas on project acceleration, digitization and execution excellence have been institutionalised as best practices. His strategic acumen and forward-thinking mindset have enabled key innovations and reforms in project delivery frameworks.
Gupta is frequently invited to speak at national and international forums, where his insights on mega project implementation, petrochemicals, digital transformation and strategic growth have earned wide acclaim.
