New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has announced the appointment of Abhay Bakre as Part-time Director (Government Nominee) on its Board. The appointment is effective from April 12, 2025.

The Ministry of Power, through its order dated April 11, 2025, conveyed the decision to appoint Bakre, who currently serves as the Mission Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). His tenure on the Board will continue until his superannuation or until further orders or a new appointment is made, whichever occurs earlier.

The appointment was approved by the Board of Directors of Power Grid through a circular resolution, in accordance with Section 161(3) of the Companies Act, 2013.

Abhay Bakre brings with him over 35 years of diverse experience across sectors such as transport, electrical construction, power distribution, petroleum conservation, and clean energy. An alumnus of Devi Ahilya University, Indore (B.E. in Electrical Engineering), and IIT Kharagpur (M.Tech in Electrical Engineering), he is also a certified Energy Manager by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

He began his career with the Indian Railways Electrical Engineering Services in 1988 and has held several leadership positions, including in Delhi Metro and Kolkata Metro extension projects. He has also served as Joint Development Commissioner in the Ministry of MSME and as Executive Director of the Petroleum Conservation Research Association under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.

As the former Director General of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Bakre played a crucial role in shaping India’s clean energy and climate policies, including the development of the Indian Carbon Market Framework. He represented India on global platforms such as the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and G-20 Energy Ministerial summits from 2018 to 2023. Notably, he was a key negotiator for India at COP26 held in Glasgow in 2021.

Power Grid has confirmed that Bakre is not related to any of the company’s directors or key managerial personnel and is not debarred from holding the office of director by any regulatory authority.

The company has notified the stock exchanges of the appointment in compliance with SEBI regulations.
