

New Delhi: South Eastern Coalfields Limited's (SECL) Biranchi Das has been entrusted with the additional charge of Director (Human Resources) of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), the coal PSU said on June 29. Presently, Das is serving in SECL at the same capacity.
Both companies are subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal.

According to an order issued by the Ministry of Coal, Das will assume the additional responsibility with effect from July 1. He will hold the additional charge of the post for a period of six months, or until the appointment of a regular Director (Human Resource) at MCL, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Das has been serving as Director (Human Resource) at SECL since March 20, 2024. He has nearly three decades of experience in human resource management, industrial relations and employee welfare.
During his tenure at SECL, the company implemented several initiatives in the areas of employee welfare and corporate social responsibility. The company's flagship CSR programme, “SECL Ki Dhadkan”, has facilitated 300 congenital heart surgeries for underprivileged children. Another initiative, “SECL Ke Sushrut”, has completed two batches of medical coaching students and became the first CSR initiative of a coal PSU to be listed on the Government of India’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) portal.
In the area of human resource management, SECL has provided employment to more than 1,623 landowners and 946 dependent family members since FY25. The company has also introduced several employee-centric measures aimed at strengthening industrial relations, employee welfare and organisational development.
Das began his career in 1994 as a Welfare Officer (Trainee) at Deulbera Colliery in MCL’s Talcher Area. He holds a postgraduate degree in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations from Utkal University, Odisha.

During his earlier stint at MCL, he played a key role in strengthening industrial relations and contributed to the formulation of several human resource policies, including the House Allotment and Administration Rules for non-executives.
He also serves as a director on the boards of Chhattisgarh East Railway Limited and Chhattisgarh East-West Railway Limited.
