

New Delhi: Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has announced that Subhasis Sengupta has assumed charge as Director (Operations) with effect from Wednesday. Prior to joining RINL, he was serving as Chief General Manager (Projects) at Steel Authority of India Limited's Durgapur Steel Plant.

Sengupta is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Bengal Engineering and Science University and holds an M.Tech in Design and Production Engineering from National Institute of Technology Durgapur. He joined SAIL as a Management Trainee (Technical) in 1992 after a brief stint with Reliance Industries Limited.
A seasoned steel industry professional with more than three decades of experience, Sengupta brings extensive expertise in steel production, maintenance, project execution, and plant management.
During his tenure as Chief General Manager (Projects) at Durgapur Steel Plant, Sengupta spearheaded major brownfield expansion projects valued at over Rs 5,500 crore. He has also been associated with the proposed 3 MTPA greenfield expansion project estimated at Rs 28,000 crore.
Earlier, as Chief General Manager (Works) and Unit Head of SAIL Growth Works, he played a key role in the turnaround of the facility, leading to a 51 percent increase in production and a 108 percent rise in turnover. He also implemented several initiatives aimed at improving equipment reliability and enhancing operational efficiency.
As Director (Operations) at RINL, Sengupta has outlined a vision to transform the company into a leading steel producer through operational excellence, digital transformation, and sustainable development. His immediate priorities include achieving full capacity utilisation, strengthening safety standards, ensuring raw material security, improving equipment reliability, optimising costs, and advancing decarbonisation efforts.

He also plans to drive the adoption of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) to improve operational efficiency, predictive maintenance, and decision-making processes. Additionally, he aims to foster collaboration with leading steel producers to adopt industry best practices.
With over 30 years of experience across steel plant operations, maintenance, and project management, Sengupta is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening RINL's operational performance and supporting its long-term growth and sustainability objectives.
