New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has announced the appointment of Surajit Mishra as Director-in-Charge of Burnpur and Durgapur Steel Plants, effective July 15, 2025. The appointment follows a nomination by the Ministry of Steel through an order dated July 14, and has been approved by the SAIL Board of Directors.
Mishra is a seasoned technocrat with over three decades of diverse experience in plant operations, maintenance, and project management within SAIL’s various units, including VISL, DSP, and ISP. An alumnus of the College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar (now OUTR), Mishra joined SAIL as a Management Trainee (Technical) on July 4, 1990.
Throughout his career, Mishra has led several key initiatives, including the modernisation of electrical drive systems and process automation at VISL, and the development of indigenous products like LHB axles for Indian Railways and torpedo ladle car wheels. As GM In-charge at VISL, he revived operations after a two-year shutdown by implementing a new business model and introducing import-substitute products.
At Durgapur Steel Plant, he played a pivotal role in upgrading automation systems and improving safety by overseeing the in-house replacement of critical gas lines. Later, as CGM In-charge (Projects) and subsequently as Executive Director (Projects) at IISCO Steel Plant, he spearheaded the preparation and approval of the ₹4.08 MTPA capacity expansion project, marking a significant milestone in SAIL’s ongoing growth strategy.
Known for his strategic foresight and innovative approach, Mishra has also contributed to building in-house design and engineering capabilities within SAIL, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and project efficiency.
SAIL has confirmed that Mishra is not debarred from holding the office of director by any regulatory authority, including SEBI.
His appointment is expected to further strengthen operational leadership at Burnpur and Durgapur, two key steel production hubs under SAIL, as the company advances its expansion and modernization plans.
