New Delhi: Vamsi Rama Mohan Burra is set to be next Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL), a PSU under the Ministry of Power. He has been recommended for the post by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) panel on Saturday. Presently, he is serving as Director (Projects) in the same organisation.
Burra has been recommended for the top post of Power Grid from a list of nine candidates who were interviewed by the PESB panel. The other candidates interviewed included senior executives from Power Grid, Ircon International Limited, National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), and Bridge and Roof Company (India) Limited.
Burra is an engineering graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma in Management and brings with him over three decades of rich experience across the power and telecom sectors. He has previously served as Chief Operating Officer (Telecom) and Officer on Special Duty (Projects) at POWERGRID, handling critical portfolios related to project execution and business expansion.
Burra has also served as Chief Executive Officer of POWERGRID Teleservices Limited, where he played a key role in scaling up the company’s telecom business and initiating work on POWERGRID’s first Data Centre, marking an important diversification milestone for the Maharatna PSU.
Burra has completed the Harvard ManageMentor (HMM) Programme and has undertaken multiple executive courses from the Indian School of Business (ISB). His professional expertise spans project implementation, procurement management, and regulatory affairs.
Notably, his deep understanding of the power sector’s regulatory framework led to his role as a founding member of POWERGRID’s Regulatory Cell. He was also a key architect of POWERGRID’s entry into tariff-based competitive bidding, a strategic shift that successfully positioned the company in India’s evolving power transmission market.
The PESB recommendation will now be forwarded to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for final approval.
