New Delhi: Prof Chetan Singh Solanki, known as “Solar Man of India”, emphasised the severity of climate change and urged everyone to be a part of the solution, as we have all been a part of the pollution. He was speaking at interactive session on “Energy Literacy” organised by Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) on May 4 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. It was one of 36 events being organised as part of the celebrations commemorating 36 years of IREDA.

Dr Solanki, Professor from IIT Bombay and founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation, emphasised the importance of understanding climate change and limiting energy use through the ‘AMG principle - Avoid, Minimise, and Generate.’ He suggested avoiding energy as much as possible even if it is Solar energy, and minimising energy use through the use of efficient appliances. He encouraged the generation of energy locally, emphasising distributed production as part of ‘Energy Swaraj’.

Prof. Solanki cautioned that fossil fuels contribute to almost 80-85% of energy and that the planet is already 1.1 degrees Celsius warmer compared to the pre-industrial era. He warned that we must take drastic measures to limit warming to ideally 1.5 degrees Celsius, beyond which the changes will be irreversible.

As a token of appreciation for IREDA's role in promoting Renewable Energy in India and creating a sustainable energy future, Prof. Solanki presented a Climate Clock to Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director, IREDA.

CMD, IREDA expressed his gratitude for Prof. Solanki's dedication to the promotion of Solar energy and acknowledged his significant contributions to energy literacy. He emphasized the importance of immediate action to reduce greenhouse gases as shown by the Climate Clock, which illustrates the current emission trends that could lead to 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming. The event witnessed enthusiastic and active participation from IREDA employees and their family members.
