New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for girls admission in Sainik Schools. This decision will be implemented with effect from academic session 2021-22 in a phased manner. The decision has been taken following the success of the pilot project started by the Ministry of Defence for girls admission in Sainik Schools Chhingchhip in Mizoram two years ago. Rajnath Singh has directed concerned authorities to ensure availability of necessary infrastructure and sufficient female staff in Sainik schools for smooth implementation of the directive.

"The decision is in line with the objective of the Government towards greater inclusiveness, gender equality, enabling greater participation of women in Armed Forces and strengthening the motto of 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao', propagated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi," said a press release issued by the Ministry of Defence.

In recent years, all three wings of defence forces, the Army, Navy and Air Force, which were once dominated by men have now slowly started opening their doors to women. The Indian Air Force is leading the way and has currently employed eight women fighter pilots.
