SAIL’s Bhilai Plant starts commercial production of SAIL SeQR TMT bars

Bhilai: Bhilai Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has started the commercial production of SAIL branded SAIL-SeQR 12mm TMT bars at its modern Bar & Rod Mill (BRM) on Thursday. The trial rolling (production) of these TMT bars had been successfully carried out in fiscal year 2019-20. Bhilai Steel Plant's Director (Projects & BP) and CEO Anirban Dasgupta, Executive Director (Works) BP Singh and senior officers of BRM and BSP were present at the time the commercial production began for the first time on Thursday.

SAIL's brand 'SeQR TMT' was launched in May 2019

SAIL had launched its new brand of TMT bars named SAIL SeQR (pronounced as SAIL secure) in the last fiscal year 2019-20. The first consignment of SAIL SeQR was flagged off from SAIL's IISCO Steel Plant in May 2019.

At the launch of SeQR in May 2019, SAIL's Chairman AK Chaudhary had said that the company's concern for safety in any construction is paramount and SAIL SeQR brand of TMT has superior properties of higher strength and improved ductility, offering assurance. These improved characteristics are top class in the market making it a preferred choice for users.

What are the features?

According to the company, SeQR TMT bar is safer and has the unique combined features of higher strength with better ductility which provides enhanced safety to construction. The unique combination of higher strength with better ductility surpasses the minimum specified level mentioned for this class by BIS. Characterised by the best UTS/YS (Ultimate Tensile Strength / Yield Strength) ratio of 1.16 in this class, these bars can absorb more energy when stressed beyond yielding point without any catastrophic failures due to sudden occurrences such as earthquake or tsunami.

Produced through an advanced manufacturing process, this combination is achieved through automated and sophisticated cooling and following stringent process control. The highly clean steel for these TMT bars are made by adopting primary steel making route with secondary refining process resulting in lower levels of sulphur and phosphorous as well as gaseous content. It brings in a marked improvement in the quality of the TMT bars. SAIL SeQR TMT bars, having a prominent and uniform rib pattern, provides a stronger bond with concrete. Moreover, this has superior bendability allowing easier bending with less effort. SAIL SeQR bars will also be available in the corrosion-resistant variety under the name SAIL SeQR-CR.

Available in different sizes

SAIL SeQR TMT bars will be available in the length of 12 meters initially, in sizes with 8 mm-20 mm diameter. SAIL is primarily focused on the segment of individual house builders through its retail marketing channel, which is also being strengthened concurrently to maximize the reach of this brand.
