New Delhi: Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has signed an agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Friday for the commencement of commercial operations from Rourkela Airport. PK Satapathy, ED (P&A), RSP (Rourkela Steel Plant), signed the agreement on behalf of SAIL and NV Subbarayudu, ED- II, JVC/PPP signed it for AAI. The operationalisation of the airport will not only enhance the connectivity of the city manyfold but will also boost the health, academic, tourism and commercial sectors, said an official statement.
The airport is ready to be used for the forthcoming World Cup Hockey matches to be played in Rourkela. Under the guidance of SAIL Chairperson Soma Mondal, and Atanu Bhowmick, Director In-Charge of SAIL RSP, the steel plant has taken the initiative of owning the airport and bearing major expenditures, a statement said. On the other hand, AAI will operate and manage the airport on behalf of SAIL RSP. Also, the state government will provide various services like security, fire-related services and ambulance services.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has provided financial support for the upgradation of this airport. Notably, the environment clearance was granted by the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority, Odisha on October 18.
