SAIL’s Rourkela plant wins award for energy conservation

SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant won the prestigious ENCON Award presented by the CII, Eastern Region, for excellence in energy conservation

Rourkela: SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) received the prestigious ENCON Award presented by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Eastern Region, for excellence in energy conservation in a large scale category. The coveted award was received by BP Pandey, Senior Manager and Himanshu Mishra, Assistant Manager, of Energy Management Department of RSP at the CII Energy Conclave held at Kolkata. Notably, RSP, which made its debut in the competition this year scored 4.5 star rating.

It is worth mentioning here that CII confers the awards to organisations both in manufacturing and service sectors in recognition of their systematic, commendable and intensive efforts for efficient utilisation as well as conservation of energy. The assessed companies are awarded star rating based on their performance with respect to meeting all statutory requirements with a highest rating of 5 star. Notably, RSP has been making relentless efforts to improve its techno-economics with special thrust on specific energy consumption.

As a result of this, the Specific Energy consumption has reduced from 6.498 Giga Calorie per Tonne of Crude Steel (GCal/TCS) in 2015-16 to 6.259 GCal /TCS in 2018-19. The plant has set a target of achieving Specific Energy consumption of 6.0 GCal/TCS, which will have a substantial positive impact in the fields of cost reduction and environment management.
