New Delhi: Somnath Nandi assumed charge as Director of (Technical) of NMDC Limited, the country's largest iron ore producing Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Steel, on Friday. Prior to joining NMDC Limited, he was Executive Director, heading Environment Management Division and Growth Division at SAIL, Kolkata. According to an earlier order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), he has been appointed to the post for with effect from December 18, till the date of his superannuation i.e. December 31, 2022, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Earlier, PSU Watch had reported when Nandi was recommended for the post of Director (Technical) of NMDC Limited by a PESB panel on August 25. He was selected from the list of 10 candidates, who were interviewed by the selection panel. The post of Director (Technical) of NMDC Limited is vacant since June 1, 2019.

Profile of Somnath Nandi

Nandi is an Engineering Graduate in Mechanical Engineering. He joined SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant as Management Trainee in the year 1984. He has experience of more than 36 years in the Steel Industry. He worked in the areas of coke ovens, field machinery maintenance, power and blowing station etc. He has rich experience at senior levels as General Manager and Executive Director and was closely involved with the intricacies of integrated steel plant operations at Durgapur Steel Plant and commissioning & stabilizing of IISCO Steel Plant.

He is known for his contribution to the Steel Industry in the manufacturing, engineering, operations, planning and strategy and he is also a vivid speaker in various industry forums. Nandi's rich experience and knowledge along with technical expertise would definitely help NMDC to scale new heights of technical excellence.

New role and responsibility

As Director (Technical) of NMDC Limited, Nandi will be a member of the board of directors of the organisation and will report to the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). He will assist the CMD and will be responsible for project management functions of the company, preparation of detailed project reports, planning and designing, construction and commissioning of the projects, research and development activities, etc. He will provide technical leadership and support to NMDC's technical teams as well as take up the challenges of NMDC's expansion and diversification plans. His experience in strategic management and technical expertise would enhance implementation of NMDC's growth plans. 

NMDC Limited

NMDC Limited, previously known as National Mineral Development Corporation, is a state-controlled mineral producer. It is owned 72.43 percent by the government and is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel. It is involved in the exploration of iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite etc. It is India's largest iron ore producer and exporter, producing more than 35 million tons of iron ore from 3 fully mechanised mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. It also operates the only mechanised diamond mine in the country at Panna in Madhya Pradesh.
