Sumit Deb assumes charge as CMD of NMDC Limited

Hyderabad: Sumit Deb has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC Limited on Saturday. Prior to assuming the role of CMD of NMDC Limited, Deb was serving as Director (Personnel) in the same organisation. With his new charge, Deb has succeeded N Baijendra Kumar (IAS), who superannuated from the services of the corporation on July 31. He brings with him vast knowledge gathered through his extensive experience at RINL & NMDC. According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Deb has been appointed as CMD of NMDC Limited with effect from August 1, till the date of his superannuation i.e. February 28, 2023, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Earlier, PSU Watch had reported that Deb was recommended for the post of CMD of NMDC on February 18. He was selected from a list of eight candidates who were interviewed by the PESB selection panel. Currently, Dev is serving as Director (Personnel) in the steel ministry PSU.

As CMD of NMDC Limited, Deb will be the chief executive of the corporation and will be accountable to its board of directors and the government. He also will be responsible for the efficient functioning of the Corporation, and for achieving its corporate objectives and performance parameters.

Deb's profile

Deb joined NMDC as General Manager (Commercial) in 2015 and was later promoted as Executive Director (Personnel & Administration). In 2019, he assumed charge as Director (Personnel) and was heading various functions of Personnel and Administration, Human Resource Development, Law, Corporate Communications, CSR, Rajbhasha and has given a new dimension to the company's vision and objectives.

Deb is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneshwar. Prior to joining NMDC Limited, he was serving Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). He joined as a Management Trainee and worked with RINL for about 25 years accumulating rich and diverse experience in the steel industry. He has worked in different regions of the country, dealing with a heterogeneous mix of both external as well as internal customers and handling the domains of HR, marketing & distribution.

Deb has diverse experience in manpower & succession planning, training & development and other HR functions. He also has experience in the marketing and distribution of steel and iron ore, sponge iron, pellets and diamonds. He has proven his capabilities by achieving various milestones along his career path. He was awarded Jawahar Puruskar in the year 2007 – 08 for his outstanding performance.
