New Delhi: Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) have announced a new joint venture, called IntelliSmart Infrastructure Private Limited (IntelliSmart). The JV will implement the roll-out programme for smart meters in India.

Govt to install 25 crore smart meters in India

"The Centre plans to install 25 crore smart meters in the next few years. With the replacement of 25 crore conventional meters with smart meters, billing efficiency can improve from 80 percent to 100 percent. Smart meters can improve billing efficiency and have the potential to increase discom revenues by Rs 1,104 billion," a joint statement released by EESL and NIIF said.

IntelliSmart will be working collaboratively with all stakeholders to procure, deploy and provide operations and maintenance for the smart meter infrastructure.

How do smart meters work?

Smart meters communicate on a real-time basis with distribution companies or discoms, enabling remote meter reading and prompt identification of network failures, thereby reducing response time and improving the quality of networks and services.
