New Delhi: Alok Kumar (IAS) has assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Power on Monday. Prior to taking over as Secretary, Ministry of Power, he was serving as Principal Secretary (Power) of the state government of Uttar Pradesh. He was also Chairman of UP Power Transmission Corporation Limited. With his new assignment, Kumar has replaced Sanjeev Nandan Sahai (IAS), who superannuated on January 31.
Kumar is a 1988-batch Indian Administrative Service Officer (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre. He completed his B Tech from IIT, Roorkee and also has an MBA in Finance. During his career of 30 years as an IAS Officer, he has held various administrative positions in revenue, transport, power, housing, urban planning and handicrafts sectors.
Before, taking the charge as Principal Secretary of the Energy and Additional Sources of Energy, Government of Uttar Pradesh, he was serving as Development Commissioner of Handlooms in the Ministry of Textiles. He also has held as Chairman of State Public Sector Undertakings under Energy Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh.
The Ministry of Power is ministry is charged with overseeing electricity production and infrastructure development, including generation, transmission, and delivery, as well as maintenance projects. India faces challenges in electrical supply and delivery and is often unable to meet demand, even in very large cities. The ministry acts as a liaison between the central government and state electricity operations, as well as with the private sector. The ministry also oversees rural electrification projects.
