New Delhi: Giridhar Aramane has assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Prior to joining as Secretary in the Transport Ministry, he was serving as Additional Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat. According to a press statement issued from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, he held briefing meetings with senior officers to review the work of the Ministry and discussed pressing issues especially in the light of the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Aramane emphasised that the Transport and Highways sector is the backbone of Indian economy.

Educational background

Aramane is a 1988 batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre. He has completed his Masters in Engineering (MTech) in Civil Egg from IIT Madras. He also holds a masters degree in Economics. He has undergone training in finance and banking matters at Singapore and France, apart from the IIM Bangalore, IIFT New Delhi and Tata Mgt Trg Centre, Pune.

Aramane has worked in the government of Andhra Pradesh at various positions including field and policy level and has vast experience in organisational and finance matters. He has also been a Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas during 2012-14.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is a ministry of the government, that is the apex body for formulation and administration of the rules, regulations and laws relating to road transport, transport research and in also to increase the mobility and efficiency of the road transport system in India. Through its officers of Central Engineering Services (Roads) cadre, it is responsible for the development of National Highways of the country. Road transport is a critical infrastructure for the economic development of the country. It influences the pace, structure and pattern of development. In India, roads are used to transport over 60 percent of the total goods and 85 percent of the passenger traffic. Hence, the development of this sector is of paramount importance for India and accounts for a significant part in the budget. Nitin Gadkari is Union Minister for Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Since 26 May 2014.
