Home Secretary Govind Mohan (IAS) gets one-year extension

The ACC has approved a one-year extension in the service of Mohan (IAS) as Home Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday

New Delhi: The Home Secretary Govind Mohan (IAS) will continue to lead the Ministry of Home Affairs for another year beyond his existing tenure. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year extension in the service of Mohan (IAS) as Home Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) August 5, the extension will be effective beyond August 22, 2026, and will continue up to August 22, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Mohan is a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Sikkim cadre and has been serving as Union Home Secretary since August 23, 2024. The ACC has approved a one-year extension of his service beyond August 22, 2026, taking his tenure up to August 22, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

An engineering graduate in Electrical Engineering from IIT (BHU), Varanasi, and a management postgraduate from IIM Ahmedabad, Mohan has held several key positions in the Central and Sikkim governments.

Before taking charge as Home Secretary, he served as Secretary of Ministry of Culture, from October 2021 to August 2024. Earlier, he held senior positions in the Ministry of Home Affairs, including Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary, and served as Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance.

Mohan has also served as Minister (Economic) at the Embassy of India in Washington D.C., where he handled economic coordination between India and the US, including matters relating to finance, energy, trade and industry. He has also held senior assignments in the Sikkim government and the Cabinet Secretariat.
