New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the assignment of additional charge of the post of Secretary, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), to Nivedita Shukla Verma (IAS). According to a DoPT order issued on June 25, Nivedita will hold the additional charge following the relinquishment of the post by Sanjay Jaju, IAS (Telangana cadre: 1992). The arrangement will remain in place until the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Born on November 3, 1967, in Jabalpur, Verma pursued higher education in the humanities before joining the civil services. She holds a Master’s degree in English Literature and a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management, combining academic training in public policy with extensive administrative experience.

After joining the IAS in 1991 and being allotted the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Verma began her career in field administration. Among her notable early assignments was her tenure as District Magistrate of Rampur, where she was responsible for district administration, implementation of government programmes and public service delivery.

Over the years, she held several important assignments in both the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre, gaining experience across multiple sectors of governance. Her broad administrative exposure led to her empanelment for Secretary-level appointments in the Government of India in 2023.

Before assuming secretary-level responsibilities in the Government of India, Verma served as Special Secretary in the Department of Defence under the Ministry of Defence. In that role, she dealt with policy and administrative matters related to defence management and inter-departmental coordination.

She subsequently served as Secretary in the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, where she oversaw policy formulation, administrative functions and coordination with industry stakeholders in the chemicals and petrochemicals sector.
