Praveen Sinha (IPS) given additional charge of CBI director

New Delhi: (Bureaucracy News) The ACC has approved the proposal of the additional charge of CBI director to be given to Praveen Sinha (IPS). The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued a notification appointing Praveen Sinha, a 1988 batch Gujarat cadre IPS, to take over as the CBI's interim chief till the appointment of a regulator director. CBI chief Rishi Kumar Shukla has completed his two-year term. Wednesday was the last working day of the 1983 batch Madhya Pradesh cadre IPS officer, who was appointed in January 2019.

"Praveen Sinha (IPS) shall look after the duties of the CBI director with immediate effect, till the appointment of new Director CBI, or until further orders, whichever is earlier," the DoPT order said.

'The process to select new CBI Director initiated'

Meanwhile, sources have said that this additional responsibility given to Sinha may last for a few weeks as the Govt has already begun the process of appointment of the new Director. The names of probable names have been drawn from the list of officers belonging to 1984 to 1986 batches.

BSF chief and Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana (IPS) and current NIA chief YC Mody (IPS) (Assam-Meghalaya cadre, 1984-batch) have their names in the panel under consideration.

The process is that after drawing the panel of eligible officers from the selected batch, the government calls a meeting of the high-powered committee. The committee comprises of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The committee picks the new CBI Director. This post is a tenured one, which means the CBI Director is selected for a period of two years irrespective of the superannuation.
