New Delhi: Reliance Jio has changed the pecking order in the telecom industry as it pipped Bharti Airtel to take the second spot on the list of India's largest mobile operators. The first spot, however, continues to be with merged entity Vodafone Idea, data sourced from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) showed.

Jio now has a total of 32.29 crore subscribers and 27.80 percent market share, as of May. Vodafone Idea, on the other hand, has 38.75 crore consumers and 33.36 percent market share in the wireless segment.

Why is this important?

The development is important as Jio entered the highly-competitive telecom market only in September 2016 with its disruptive voice and data offerings, while Bharti Airtel launched its services way back in 1995.

Bharti Airtel has now slipped to the third spot with 32.03 crore mobile subscribers and 27.58 percent subscriber market share.

What about BSNL?

For a loss-making public sector company that is awaiting pulling all it could from its bag to cut costs and up its revenues, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has shown a lot of consistency over the past few months. According to the TRAI data, the telecom service provider added 2,125 wireless subscribers during May.

This comes as established players like Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel lost subscribers, at 56.97 lakh and 15.08 lakh users, respectively.
