Coal India organises Kantha Fair to empower women artisans in West Bengal

The event showcased the intricate embroidery work of 200-250 women artisans from West Bengal, beneficiaries of the Kantha Skill Centre established under CIL’s CSR initiative

New Delhi: In a significant move towards women’s empowerment and socio-economic development, Coal India Limited (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal, organised a day-long Kantha Fair at its headquarters in New Town, Kolkata. The event showcased the intricate embroidery work of 200-250 women artisans from West Bengal, beneficiaries of the Kantha Skill Centre established under CIL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The fair was part of CIL’s broader commitment to promoting self-reliance among women through skill development and entrepreneurship. CIL and its subsidiaries marked the occasion with various programs celebrating women’s contributions across different offices and regions.

Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), based in Ranchi, Jharkhand, took the lead by organising a mega event highlighting tribal art, women-led businesses, and technical skills. Other subsidiaries, including Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL), Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Ltd (CMPDIL), Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), and Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), also conducted programs with a common theme of women empowerment.

The Ministry of Coal's Additional Secretary Rupinder Brar and CIL's Director (Personnel & Industrial Relations) Dr Vinay Ranjan addressed the event virtually. Smt. Brar emphasized that the initiative aligns with CIL’s commitment to fostering sustainable livelihoods and positively transforming communities through impactful CSR programs. Dr Ranjan highlighted the company’s dedication to empowering marginalized communities and preserving India’s rich artistic heritage.

The event was inaugurated by CIL's Director (P&IR) Dr Vinay Ranjan; Director (Finance) Mukesh Agrawal; and Chief Vigilance Officer Brajesh Kumar Tripathy in the presence of participating women artisans. During the event, three artisans were felicitated for their exemplary work. Senior officials, including OP Mishra, Executive Director (CD), and Renu Chaturvedi, GM (CSR), were also present.

Through such initiatives, CIL continues to play a pivotal role in empowering women and fostering socio-economic growth while preserving traditional craftsmanship.
