According to the company, the upcoming facility is aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and further advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the strategic defence sector.

Established under the Ministry of Defence in 1970, BDL is one of India’s leading defence manufacturing enterprises and a key production partner of Defence Research and Development Organisation for strategic and tactical weapon systems. The PSU manufactures advanced missile systems including Akash, Astra and Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM), besides underwater weapon systems such as Varunastra heavy weight torpedo, TAL lightweight torpedo, C-303 decoy and launchers.

The company said the new manufacturing complex is being developed to cater to the increasing requirements of the Indian Navy for advanced underwater weapon systems and naval combat systems. Spread across nearly 160 acres, the facility will house advanced manufacturing and assembly infrastructure, integration buildings, explosive handling and storage facilities, acoustic tank testing infrastructure, administrative buildings and a dedicated green belt.

BDL stated that the project will significantly enhance its production capacity, facilitate execution of multiple concurrent projects and strengthen collaboration with DRDO laboratories and Indian Navy establishments in the Visakhapatnam region. The facility will primarily focus on underwater weapon systems, torpedoes, mines and associated naval systems.
