COVID-19: Cochin Shipyard goes back to work in Kerala; ship-building, repair resumed

After Ernakulam district in Kerala was notified as a Green Zone with respect to COVID-19, the Kerala unit of Cochin Shipyard has gone back to work

New Delhi: After Ernakulam district in Kerala was notified as a Green Zone with respect to COVID-19 cases, the Kerala unit of state-run Cochin Shipyard has gone back to work, the company said in a regulatory filing to the stock exchanges on Wednesday. However, operations at Cochin Shipyard's Mumbai and Kolkata units have not been resumed yet, it added. The PSU had stopped all ship-building and repair work from March 23, just days before a nationwide lockdown was put in place by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

"Pursuant to the Ernakulam District being notified as Green Zone, CSL has resumed its operations in two shifts of 5:45 hrs. each, strictly complying with the government directives issued in this regard by both the Central and state governments," the filing said.

Cochin Shipyard has 1,200-1,400 staff in each shift

"The operations are resumed with a reduced strength of about 1,200 to 1,400 people in each shift as against the normal engagement of about 7,500 people," Cochin Shipyard said. Elaborating on the safety guidelines being implemented at work, it said, "CSL has also put in place a standard operating procedure… at the workplace including non-contact temperature checking at the entry gates, wearing of mask, hand gloves, social distancing and installation of Arogya Setu App in mobile of employees, to ensure the safety of the employees and to contain the spread of COVID-19."

Mumbai and Kolkata units still shut

The regulatory filing said that the company's Mumbai and Kolkata units are still shut. Maharashtra is the state that has reported the most number of Coronavirus cases in the country. The current tally in Maharashtra stands at 16,511, while in Mumbai, the total number of confirmed Coronavirus cases reported so far stands at 10,527, including 2,287 people who have recovered and 412 deaths. West Bengal, on the other hand, has reported 1,344 confirmed cases so far.
