The warship, named 'Sanghmitra,' was launched by Sarita Vatsayan, wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, amid traditional rituals and chanting of shlokas at GRSE’s shipyard in Kolkata. GRSE is constructing four NGOPVs for the Navy.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Admiral Vatsayan said the NGOPV project holds significant importance for the Navy’s operational preparedness and maritime presence. He also lauded GRSE for delivering eight ships during the last financial year.
“Today’s launch adds another important chapter to its legacy,” he said, noting that the Indian Navy continues to evolve into a force committed not only to combat readiness but also to ensuring a stable maritime environment through cooperation and presence.
According to GRSE, the NGOPVs will be significantly larger and more capable than earlier offshore patrol vessels, with enhanced endurance and firepower. The vessels will measure around 113 metres in length and 14.6 metres in width, with a displacement of 3,000 tonnes. They will be capable of achieving speeds of up to 23 knots and will have an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at 14 knots.
The company said the vessels are designed to undertake a wide range of missions, including protection of offshore assets, maritime interdiction, visit-board-search-seizure operations, anti-piracy missions, convoy operations, counter-infiltration duties and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
The ships will also support non-combatant evacuation operations, search and rescue missions, mine warfare roles and special operations, while additionally possessing capabilities to function as hospital and communication intelligence platforms.

Highlighting the shipyard’s technological advancements, GRSE Chairman and Managing Director PR Hari said the launch marks the beginning of an active year for the company.
“We are kickstarting 2026-27 with the launch of this vessel and this year too will see multiple launches and deliveries,” he said.
GRSE noted that it has considerable expertise in constructing warships and patrol vessels, including the offshore patrol vessel *MCGS Barracuda*, which became India’s first exported warship when it was delivered to Mauritius in 2014.
