New Delhi: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) on Tuesday announced the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Navy and the Brazilian Navy to enhance cooperation in the maintenance of Scorpène-class submarines and other military vessels. The MoU, inked on December 9, underscores growing maritime collaboration between the two nations with MDL positioned as a strategic partner.
The agreement has been formally signed by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (Indian Navy); Admiral Marcos Olsen, Commander of the Brazilian Navy; and Capt Jagmohan, Chairman & Managing Director, MDL. According to MDL, the partnership aims to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation and foster future-ready collaboration across defence domains.
The MoU encompasses several key areas, including procurement opportunities, exchange of experience and best practices within defence industries, and joint initiatives in research, development, and technological innovation. The arrangement is expected to support operational readiness for Scorpène-class submarines—operated by both navies—and boost the broader defence industrial ecosystem.
In a parallel development, MDL reported the signing of the Second Reading Acceptance Documents (D448) for INS Imphal, the third destroyer under the Project 15B programme. The documents were signed on December 9, 2025, by Biju George, Director (Shipbuilding) and officiating CMD, MDL, and Rear Admiral R. Adhisrinivasan, CSO (Tech), in the presence of senior officials from MDL and the Indian Navy.
The milestone marks another major step toward the commissioning of INS Imphal, reflecting India’s growing indigenous shipbuilding capabilities and MDL’s pivotal role in delivering frontline naval platforms.
MDL said both developments highlight its ongoing commitment to strengthening India’s maritime and strategic capabilities through international collaboration and advanced shipbuilding.
