Hyderabad: IIME (Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers) Hyderabad chapter is organising the 18th International Conference on Mineral Processing Technology (MPT) at Hyderabad from December 16 to 18 at Hyderabad. The theme for this year's event is "Mineral processing for Global Economy-Concept to Commercialization."

The conference chief guest for the inaugural function was Dr Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission & Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).

IIME's President Dr Narendra K Nanda, MPT-2019's Chairman & NGRI's (National Geophysical Research Institute) Director Dr VM Tiwari and MPT-2019's Convener & NMDC Limited's Jt GM (R&D) SK Chaurasiya were present during the inaugural function of 18th Conference on Mineral Processing Technology.

Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas addressed the gathering and emphasized that in the present challenging global scenario new mining and mineral processing technologies should be developed in a collaborative way with other disciplines so has to make these operations sustainable and with improved reliability & productivity with minimum environmental impact.

IIME's President Dr Nanda informed about the activities of IIME and emphasized the relevance of mineral processing for beneficiation of lean grade ore and sustainable use of depleting mineral resources and zero-waste mining. He further said that we must be remembered that ores are finite resources, so there will be an increasing strain on primary sources, and a concomitant increase in energy and water requirements. Critical to a sustainable future, however, is the need to move from a linear to a circular economy, by retreating old tailings dumps and crucially by recycling materials at the end of their effective lives. So, there are great challenges ahead and mineral processing will be at the forefront of the future quest for a circular economy, which is why this conference is so important, not only to the mining industry but to society in general.

NMDC Limited's Dupety General Manager & Co-Convener MPT 2019 Dr GV Rao presented vote of thanks.

In this conference, about 250 delegates are participating from academia, research institutions and industries from India and abroad. During these three days of conference four plenary talks, 18 keynote addresses, 21 invited talks, 130 technical papers and 65 posters will be presented on different areas such as critical & strategic metals, Iron ore, Coal, Tailing management, beneficiations, water & environment, extractive metallurgy, bulk material & cement and computational modelling.
