Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma met officials of Coal India to come up with a plan for the effective auctioning of 32 lakh metric tonnes of assessed coal in the state. "We met the Coal India chairman and company officials and we are we are trying to find the most practical and efficient manner in which we can dispose of the coal that has been lying," Sangma said.

Sangma said that the state was working with Coal India to prepare a detailed report by identifying different grades of coal, conducting surveys and giving the lists of the available stock. "We will prepare a detailed report on the basis of which CIL and the state government will decide the way forward," he said.
The meeting comes after the Commissioner and Secretary in-charge of the Mining and Geology Department of Meghalaya, Tining Dkhar, chaired a meeting of miners and officials of East Jaintia Hills district to discuss the need to re-assess the stock.
While lifting the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Supreme Court had earlier directed the state to hand over all the extracted coal to Coal India for proper disposal.
