New Delhi: You may not have heard of Rana Pratap Nagar railway station of Ajmer division in Rajasthan ever, but for Railways, the station has turned into a milestone of sorts. The station became the 2,000th station of the Indian Railways in the country to have free WiFi facility, officials said on Saturday.
Puneet Chawla, the CMD of RailTel, said in an official statement, "Our team is working round the clock and with each passing day, execution pace is only increasing. Yesterday we made 74 stations live and while we speak some more stations are being made live with free wifi which is an incredible feat for us."
RailTel, a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the aegis of the Ministry of Railways, has been entrusted with the task of providing WiFi services at railway stations across the country with the aim of turning them into a platform for digital inclusion.
Under the first phase of the programme, the PSU made WiFi available across 1,600 stations in the country.

Now, RailTel has roped in Tata Trust for providing Internet facility at remaining stations, except the halt ones.
The statement said that the idea behind providing WiFi to these very small stations in remote rural areas with low population density is to provide people with state-of-the-art Internet facility.
